A 470-Kilometre Journey Through Islamic History
The Ala Khutah experience follows a route of approximately 470 kilometres, retracing the historic journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companion, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), from Makkah to Madinah.
The journey begins at the historic Cave of Thawr near Makkah and concludes at Quba Mosque in Madinah. It offers visitors an opportunity to learn about significant locations associated with the Hijrah and understand the historical and spiritual importance of this defining event in Islamic history. <Cite refs={["turn937802search0","turn937802search12"]}/>
41 Historical Sites and Interactive Experiences
The project features 41 historical sites along the route, combining heritage exploration with educational and interactive experiences. Visitors can learn about important events of the Hijrah through guided visits, storytelling and specially designed activities.
The experience is intended to make Islamic history more accessible by allowing visitors to engage with the locations and stories associated with the migration rather than relying solely on written accounts.
Visitor Facilities and Travel Arrangements
The route includes designated stations where visitors can rest, explore historical landmarks and access hospitality facilities. The project also incorporates transport options and accommodation arrangements to support visitors travelling along different sections of the route.
Depending on the package and itinerary, the journey can be completed over several days. The official project platform provides information about the experience, available packages and booking arrangements. <Cite refs={["turn937802search2","turn937802search7"]}/>
Preserving Islamic Heritage and Promoting Religious Tourism
The Ala Khutah initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to preserve historical sites and enrich the experiences of pilgrims and visitors under Saudi Vision 2030.
By highlighting the historical and spiritual dimensions of the Hijrah, the project seeks to strengthen visitors’ understanding of the Prophet’s life and the values of faith, patience, sacrifice and perseverance associated with the migration.
It may also contribute to cultural awareness, tourism-related economic activity and the preservation of important historical locations for future generations.
Future Goals and Development
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the project’s first phase aims to attract one million visitors, with a target of five million visitors by 2030 and the possibility of further expansion. <Cite refs={["turn937802search1","turn937802search6"]}/>
The long-term success of the initiative will depend on maintaining historical accuracy, protecting heritage sites, ensuring visitor safety and providing clear guidance and suitable facilities throughout the journey.
