Jaranwala: In a tragic case involving residents of Jaranwala, a court has sentenced the main accused, Saddam Hussain, to 14 years in prison and a fine of Rs. 400,000.
Background of the Case
The case came to light some time ago when several Pakistani citizens were allegedly sent to Saudi Arabia under the promise of a free Umrah pilgrimage. According to reports, elderly men and women were among those who traveled.
Drugs Allegedly Hidden in a Box of Sweets
At Islamabad Airport, a man reportedly handed the travelers a box of sweets, telling them that it was intended for a friend in Saudi Arabia.
Initially, the travelers refused to take the box with them. However, they were allegedly put in contact with the main accused by phone. They were reportedly told that the sweets were being sent to friends for a celebration and that clothes, shoes and other gifts had also been arranged for them.
Trusting the person who had offered them a free Umrah pilgrimage, the travelers eventually agreed to take the items with them.
Arrest in Saudi Arabia
After arriving in Saudi Arabia, airport authorities allegedly recovered approximately 5.5 kilograms of ice from their luggage, following which they were arrested.
Elderly Woman Dies in Custody
Among those arrested was an elderly woman, Anwar Bibi, who reportedly died while in custody in a Saudi Arabian prison. Her body was later brought back to Pakistan.
Reports indicate that other Pakistani nationals arrested in the case remain imprisoned in Saudi Arabia.
Main Accused Sentenced
A Pakistani court has now sentenced the main accused, Saddam Hussain, to 14 years in prison and a fine of Rs. 400,000.
A Lesson for the Public
The incident serves as an important warning for people traveling abroad. Travelers should avoid carrying another person's luggage, sweets, gifts or packages without properly checking and verifying their contents, regardless of how close or trustworthy the person offering them may seem.
Question for Readers
In view of the alleged crime and its serious consequences, do you think a 14-year prison sentence is sufficient, or should the punishment be more severe?
