PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shaukat Yousafzai has strongly criticised the federal government over reports of a possible emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the government should stop issuing threats and focus on resolving political disputes.
Speaking on ARY News’ programme Sawal Yeh Hai, Yousafzai maintained that the federal government could not impose an emergency or governor’s rule in the province. He claimed that the discussion was intended to put political pressure on the PTI and argued that the federal government itself appeared confused about its next move.
Questions Over Constitutional Provisions
Referring to Articles 232 and 234 of Pakistan’s Constitution, Yousafzai said the federal government had not clarified which constitutional provision it intended to invoke.
He warned that any decision to impose an emergency or governor’s rule would be a foolish move and could further intensify political tensions.
Article 232 deals with the proclamation of an emergency, while Article 234 concerns presidential action in the event of a failure of constitutional machinery in a province. Any action under these provisions must comply with the applicable constitutional requirements and procedures.
“PTI Is a Political Party, Not a Mob”
Yousafzai emphasised that the PTI was a political party that had secured public support through elections. He said peaceful protest was a democratic right and described the party’s demands as legitimate.
He also criticised the portrayal of the PTI’s protests as an attack, arguing that the party was pursuing its political demands through protest.
Meeting With Imran Khan Is Key to Resolving the Crisis
The PTI leader said the party’s primary demand was permission to meet its founder, Imran Khan.
According to Yousafzai, allowing the meeting could help ease political tensions and create an opportunity to address the ongoing crisis. He urged the federal government to take the party’s demands seriously and pursue a political solution rather than escalate the confrontation.
Political Tensions Continue
Yousafzai’s remarks reflect the PTI’s strong opposition to the possibility of an emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The dispute highlights continuing tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.
The federal government’s final position on the matter, however, would need to be established through official statements or notifications.
