LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Moonis Elahi has raised questions over alleged irregularities in wheat procurement in Punjab, claiming that against a target of 2.5 million tonnes, official records reportedly show the procurement of only 160,000 tonnes.
According to the figures cited by Moonis Elahi, the difference amounts to 2.34 million tonnes of wheat. He questioned where the remaining quantity had gone and called for transparency regarding the procurement and handling of wheat in the province.
Questions Raised Over Private Companies and Official Records
The PTI leader also raised questions about the alleged favouring of private companies and the role of 11 patwaris (revenue officials). He called for accountability and demanded explanations regarding the wheat procurement process and the relevant official records.
However, the allegations and figures require independent verification, and the response of the relevant government departments is necessary to establish the facts.
Calls for Transparency Amid Public Concerns Over Food Prices
Moonis Elahi criticised the lack of clarity surrounding the issue, arguing that the public deserves answers about the management of an essential food commodity at a time when many households are struggling with rising living costs.
He called for the relevant records, procurement figures and the responsibilities of the officials concerned to be clarified.
The allegations have raised questions about transparency in Punjab’s wheat procurement system. A clear response from the provincial government and a review of the relevant records would help establish whether any irregularities occurred.
Note: The alleged misappropriation and other claims have not been independently verified. Their accuracy would need to be established through official records and an impartial investigation.
