PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to introduce five modern mobile drug screening laboratories from next week to prevent the sale of substandard, counterfeit and suspicious medicines in markets across the province and strengthen the monitoring of drug quality.
Nigar Johar Khan, Adviser to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Health and Population, visited the Directorate General of Drug Control and Pharmacy Services, where she inspected the newly prepared mobile laboratory vans.
During the visit, the health adviser reviewed various departments of the directorate and received a briefing on the monitoring of medicine quality and measures being taken to ensure the availability of safe medicines to the public.
According to government officials, all five mobile laboratories are equipped with modern scientific technology, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman technology. These advanced instruments will enable drug inspectors to conduct preliminary on-site examinations of medicines, including their chemical composition, ingredients and quality.
The mobile laboratory vans will be deployed across all divisions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to improve drug surveillance and help authorities identify suspicious or potentially substandard medicines more quickly.
Officials said that if a medicine is found suspicious during preliminary screening, drug inspectors will collect its samples and send them to the central Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) in Peshawar for detailed scientific analysis. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the findings.
The five mobile drug screening laboratories are scheduled to be formally inaugurated at Governor House Peshawar on Tuesday.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the provincial drug monitoring system, preventing the circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines, and improving public access to safe and quality-assured medicines.
