KARACHI: April 27, 1976, marked an important milestone in Pakistan’s aviation history when the country’s first Boeing 747, widely known as the “Jumbo Jet,” arrived at Karachi Airport.
Under an agreement made during the government of that time, Pakistan acquired Boeing 747 aircraft in 1976. Their arrival represented a significant development for the country’s aviation sector and its national airline, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
According to historical accounts, the first Boeing 747 arrived in Karachi after travelling through Lisbon, London and Islamabad. The flight also carried Air Marshal Noor Khan, who was serving as PIA’s chairman at the time.
A large gathering was present at Karachi Airport to welcome the aircraft and its crew. However, the crowd visible in the historic photograph was not made up of members of the general public. It mainly consisted of PIA employees and representatives of various organisations who had gathered to welcome Air Marshal Noor Khan and the arriving flight crew.
The gathering included PIA staff, representatives of the PIA trade union, airport authorities, Civil Aviation employees, specially invited guests holding official passes, and a large number of newspaper reporters who attended to cover the historic occasion.
The arrival of the Boeing 747 was a landmark moment for Pakistan’s aviation industry, reflecting a significant step forward in the development of long-distance air travel and the country's national airline.
Today, this historic photograph serves as a reminder of an important chapter in the history of Pakistan International Airlines and the country's aviation sector.
