ISLAMABAD: The federal government has confirmed that Sohail Afridi, the suspended Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and some members of his cabinet have been taken into protective custody.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry told Reuters on Monday that Afridi and certain cabinet members were taken into protective custody on Sunday following the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule.
Chaudhry said that individuals facing registered cases would be formally charged and put on trial, while those not facing charges would be released.
Meanwhile, a senior Peshawar police official told Dawn that a total of eight people were in custody. Those reportedly included Sohail Afridi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) provincial president Junaid Akbar, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati.
PTI had been claiming for the past day that Afridi had been arrested. The federal government has now reportedly confirmed that he is in protective custody.
