Islamabad, October 16, 2026: Pakistan has identified 92 different minerals, of which 52 are reportedly being extracted on a commercial basis, according to a report attributed to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL). The country’s estimated mineral wealth has been put at approximately $8 trillion, highlighting the potential of the sector to contribute to economic growth and attract international investment.
Despite these extensive natural resources, the mining and minerals sector continues to account for less than 3% of Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the report.
Mineral Exports Could Rise to $8 Billion Annually
The report states that Pakistan’s current mineral exports are estimated at around $3 billion annually. With effective policies, increased investment, modern technology and improved exploration, the country could potentially raise mineral exports to $8 billion per year.
Better development and management of mineral resources could help Pakistan strengthen its export earnings and create new opportunities for economic growth.
Reko Diq Project: A Major Investment Opportunity
The Reko Diq project in Balochistan has been described in the report as Pakistan’s largest foreign investment project and a major development for the country’s mining industry.
According to the report, production from the project’s first phase is expected to begin by the end of 2028. Once operational, the project is projected to produce approximately 240,000 tonnes of copper and 297,000 ounces of gold annually.
The project is expected to play an important role in developing Pakistan’s mineral resources and attracting international investment.
Agreements with a US Company
The report also refers to agreements between Pakistan and US-based company US Strategic Metals concerning the development of critical minerals.
These agreements have been presented as a step towards encouraging international investment and promoting the use of advanced technology in Pakistan’s minerals sector.
Pakistan Seeks to Attract Global Investors
Pakistan is also seeking to showcase its mineral potential to international investors through the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2026.
According to the report, effective policies, modern exploration techniques and foreign investment could help transform the country’s mineral wealth into a stronger source of economic development.
Experts cited in the report suggest that increased investment in the sector could boost exports, reduce pressure on imports and create new economic opportunities.
