A Simple Request, and an Extraordinary Discovery
It was August 1990. President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dismissed the government of Benazir Bhutto and appointed prominent Sindh politician Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi as the caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Around the same time, a young army officer, Captain Safdar, who was serving with the Pakistan Army’s 111 Brigade, was appointed as Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC).
After moving into the Prime Minister’s House, Captain Safdar made a simple request to the administration: he asked for a separate cupboard where he could keep his personal belongings. It was such an ordinary request that no one could have imagined it would lead to a discovery that would later become a much-discussed episode within the walls of the Prime Minister’s House.
The Cupboard Was Opened, and the Past Came to Light
The administration provided Captain Safdar with a locked cupboard that had actually been brought from Sindh House. It was reportedly the same cupboard that had previously been used by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
A few days later, when Captain Safdar opened the cupboard to place his personal belongings inside, he was surprised to find items that did not belong to him. Inside were what were described as “white gold” jewellery pieces, along with an album containing family photographs of Benazir Bhutto.
At that moment, the young army officer faced two choices: remain silent or act with honesty and integrity.
A Decision That Not Everyone Might Have Made
Captain Safdar did not waste any time. He immediately informed the Prime Minister’s Military Secretary and, following the proper procedure, handed over the jewellery and photographs.
The Military Secretary brought the matter to the attention of Caretaker Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi. The items were subsequently sent to former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto along with a written note explaining that they had been found by a young army captain inside a cupboard that had previously been used by her.
But the story did not end there.
A few days later, diamond rings containing precious stones were also discovered in another drawer of the same cupboard. These too were handed over through the same official procedure and returned to Benazir Bhutto.
Benazir Bhutto’s Appreciation and the Buzz at the Prime Minister’s House
When the belongings reached Benazir Bhutto, she reportedly appreciated Captain Safdar’s conduct and expressed her gratitude to him.
The incident further strengthened the reputation Captain Safdar already had for professionalism and good character. The story became widely discussed within the Prime Minister’s House: a young captain had discovered valuable belongings that he had no prior knowledge of and, without any personal gain, ensured that they were returned to their rightful owner.
Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi’s Account
According to an interview given by Pakistan’s first caretaker Prime Minister, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, he personally confirmed the incident and spoke highly of Captain Safdar’s character.
Jatoi said:
As caretaker Prime Minister, Captain Safdar served at the Prime Minister’s House for three months. Captain Safdar was not only a professional soldier but also extremely honest, trustworthy and a man of character, with the qualities of a respectable family background.”
He further said:
“I always heard praise for him, both from his seniors and from my personal staff. I always enjoyed speaking with him because, in addition to observing protocol, he treated me with the respect one would show to an elder. His sense of humility and respect was also quite evident, reflecting the values of a respectable family background. These qualities and his manner made him distinctive and exceptional.”
A Recommendation to Nawaz Sharif
Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi also made another significant revelation in the interview. He said:
“I personally informed Mian Nawaz Sharif about Captain Safdar’s qualities and abilities and recommended him as someone suitable to serve as his ADC when he assumed the office of Prime Minister. He subsequently did so.”
Thus, the young captain who had won the respect of those around him through his honesty was appointed ADC to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1990. That association would later develop into a relationship that became part of Pakistan’s political history.
A Special Note
The account regarding Benazir Bhutto’s valuable jewellery and old family photographs reportedly came to light when Captain Safdar was serving as Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi’s ADC. Several newspaper columns were subsequently written about the matter, while, according to the writer, no contradiction or clarification regarding the account came to light.
(The responsibility for the accuracy of the account rests with the narrator and the columnist.)
The Lesson
This is not merely the story of an incident; it is a lesson in character.
It reminds us that honesty is not dependent on rank, position or authority. It is a quality embedded in a person’s character. And when that quality shines through at a moment of temptation or responsibility, it can leave an enduring mark on history.
What Captain (Retd.) Safdar did that day may have seemed like an ordinary act to him. Yet it was precisely that ordinary act of honesty that became a reflection of his character and continues to be remembered as an example of integrity.
