ISLAMABAD: A heated exchange took place between Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman during a session of the National Assembly. Khawaja Asif strongly criticised Maulana Fazlur Rehman, questioning his past tenure as chairman of the Kashmir Committee and his long political career.
Questions Raised Over the Kashmir Committee
Khawaja Asif said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had served as chairman of the Kashmir Committee for approximately 10 years. He questioned what contributions had been made during that period towards the Kashmir cause.
He challenged the JUI-F chief to explain what significant achievements he had accomplished during his tenure as chairman of the committee.
Criticism of Political History
The defence minister also criticised Maulana Fazlur Rehman's political history, pointing out that he had been part of governments during certain periods and had also played a role in opposition politics.
Khawaja Asif said that whenever he made a political statement, he remained mindful of his own past so that his political opponents could not use it against him.
“Have Some Shame, Show Some Decency!”
During the exchange, Khawaja Asif adopted a harsh tone and said:
“You taunt me. Have some shame! Show some decency! You should also have some shame and show some decency!”
He further questioned the political privileges Maulana Fazlur Rehman had enjoyed over the past four decades, arguing that political leaders should be held accountable for whether their actions match the principles they publicly advocate.
Khawaja Asif also remarked that no politician should consider himself beyond criticism or scrutiny over his past political conduct.
Background of the Exchange
The verbal confrontation reportedly followed a remark by Maulana Fazlur Rehman directed at Khawaja Asif during parliamentary proceedings. Khawaja Asif responded sharply, leading to a heated exchange that highlighted the political differences between the two leaders.
