LAHORE: Political analyst and columnist Mazhar Barlas has claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s personality has had a profound impact not only on his supporters but also on some prison staff and government officials. Barlas recounted purported incidents involving Khan’s prayer mat and a chair he allegedly used at Attock Jail.
Claim About Imran Khan’s Prayer Mat
Speaking during a vlog hosted by anchorperson Asma Chaudhry, Barlas claimed that prison staff attach special significance to the prayer mat on which Imran Khan offers his prayers. According to him, some staff members take the mat to their homes and keep it as a treasured possession.
Alleged Dispute Over a Chair at Attock Jail
Barlas further claimed that when Imran Khan was first imprisoned at Attock Jail, he sat on a particular chair. According to Barlas, a disagreement later arose between the jail superintendent and deputy superintendent over who would keep the chair.
He said the deputy superintendent maintained that the chair had been brought from his own home. Barlas also claimed that the deputy superintendent’s children had preserved it as a memento by placing Imran Khan’s photograph on it and decorating it with ribbons, with no one reportedly allowed to sit on it.
Barlas Praises Imran Khan’s Leadership
Commenting on Imran Khan’s personality and popularity, Barlas said that the Indian subcontinent had not produced a leader as courageous as Khan in the past 500 years. He described the PTI founder as someone who holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Pakistanis.
Important Note
The accounts concerning Imran Khan’s prayer mat, the chair, and the alleged disagreement between prison officials are based on claims made by Mazhar Barlas. They have not been independently verified, and no official confirmation from prison authorities or the relevant institutions has been established.
